SSOPO Bayview Manor Outreach Concert Supports Seattle Music Partners

On Monday January 28th, Roberta Hanson Downey, cellist, Nellie Crane, violist, Allison Kanter Farkas, violist, Mark Robbins, horn, and myself, (Jeannie Wells Yablonsky), performed at the Bayview Manor Retirement Facility on lower Queen Anne for its residents and some guests. We played the Mozart horn quintet K. 407 in E-flat Major and the G Major Beethoven string trio, Op. 9.

In attendance was Phyllis Allport, a beloved member of the Seattle Symphony, who held the position of Associate Principal Cello for many years, who now resides at Bayview Manor. Another retired colleague, Corinne Odegard, a former member of the first violin section, came to our concert as well. Corinne served for 44 years in the symphony and was very dear to me when I first joined the orchestra, back in the late '90s! It was wonderful to see both of them and get to visit a little.

We were so happy that the management at Bayview offered to make a donation to the Seattle Music Partners, an extraordinary organization which provides a free, after-school music program at four elementary schools in the Central District. Seattle Music Partners provide instruments, music stands, method books and transportation without charge to all participants. There are over 100 volunteers who represent 25 schools and community ensembles who give private lessons every week, mentoring, and live performances.

The Seattle Symphony musicians have recently become involved in this effort, about which I'm sure there will be a future posting in more depth on our website.

Jennifer Ahrens, the Director of Annual Giving at Bayview Retirement Community said: "Bayview Retirement Community is planning to donate to the Seattle Music Partners program. They are very grateful for the time and talent of the Seattle Symphony and Opera Players Organization (SSOPO) , who performed for Bayview residents and community, and appreciate the wonderful programs offered through Seattle Music Partners." The importance and great benefits of music education in schools cannot be overestimated. Many of us feel very strongly about it and are reaching out to the community as volunteers doing what we love most, teaching and performing.
