Augustin Hadelich & Efe Baltacıgil play Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia
From Superstar Violinist Augustin Hadelich
A few weeks ago I was talking to my friend Efe Baltacıgil in Seattle, and we decided to make a video of Handel-Halvorsen's Passacaglia! This is an over-the-top set of variations, based on music by Georg Friedrich Händel - also known as George Frideric Handel (he lived in England for 47 years and changed the spelling of his name).
Halvorsen's exciting Passacaglia on Handel's theme tells us a lot about how musicians in the late 19th century interpreted baroque music - severe and monumental rather than intimate, expressive and light (which is how everyone would play that Händel theme today, and how it surely was intended).
I've known Efe for many years, from all my concerts and recordings with the Seattle Symphony, as well as performances together with the Seattle Chamber Music Society and it's always a joy to collaborate together. I've been missing playing with other musicians in this time, and while there's no substitute for actually being in the same room, this is as close as we can get for the moment!
Thank you Augustin and Efe so much for this wonderful performance!
