SSO Players Give Masterclasses for Seattle Area Brass Students

In 2005 Seattle Symphony Principal Tuba Chris Olka coordinated a series of Brass Masterclasses for Seattle area brass players of all ages and abilities. David Gordon (principal trumpet), Jeff Fair (assistant principal horn), Ko-ichiro Yamamoto (principal trombone), Steve Fissel (bass trombone) and Kimberly Russ (SSO resident keyboard) assisted in presenting these classes free to the public. The topics included fundamentals, solo playing, chamber music, and audition preparation.

In 2005-2006 the classes were hosted in Soundbridge and the Taper Auditorium lobby. In 2007-2008, because of scheduling conflicts, the classes were hosted by Ackright’s Music in Shoreline, WA. All of the classes were well attended and audience sizes ran between 75-125 people per class.

Each of the members of the SSOPO shares similar experiences where a great player or music teacher inspired them. It is our hope that through these classes we can help inspire the next generation of brass players and cultivate audiences for the Seattle Symphony and live music in our community.

The response to these classes from the community has been tremendous and we hope to make them an annual event. Many thanks to all who attended as well as the Seattle Symphony members who volunteered their time and money to make these classes a success.
