Inspired, Indeed

Having just walked off the stage of Benaroya Hall after what can only be described as a stunning performance of Olivier Messiaen’s “Turangalîla Symphonie”, I was immediately immersed in a wonderful mix of thoughts relating to where we have been and where we are going. The Seattle Symphony has recently announced its 2013-14 season, elegantly trumpeted from the cover of its new brochure. Our more...

Behind The Scenes: Practicing With The SSOPO Musicians

Next in our series of behind the scenes Seattle Symphony musicians' practicing, we have a story from Chris Olka, our Principal Tubist. Most of our readers out there probably know how much Symphony musicians have to practice on top of rehearsals to maintain our skills and be fully prepared for performances - anywhere from 20-40 additional hours weekly. Did you know that a tuba's sound can be so more...

Seattle Symphony Bass Answers One Call For All

The life of a symphony musician is very busy. A regular week will often have three concerts, four rehearsals and a recording session. When you add in other gigs, driving to soccer practices, gymnastics and horseback riding lessons, walking the dog, cooking and practicing, there isn’t much time left in the day. In my world, my family comes first, my job comes second, and my personal pursuits more...

The photo of me sitting in the middle of the stream is from 2005 shortly after Ko-ichiro won the principal trombone job here. I love to practice outside and took him to my favorite river-side practice room up at the Snoqualmie-Hyack exit. The picture of me in front of the lake holding my tuba is from when I was in Matsumoto, Japan playing for Seiji Ozawa's Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra. I am a member of the orchestra and have been playing with them every few Summers since 2004. I rented this tiny little Japanese car for the day and drove into the surrounding mountains to sight-see and find a place to practice. In the city where the festival is held it is EXTREMELY difficult to find a place to practice with a large instrument without disturbing a lot of people. One of my favorite hobbies is train-watching, so when the City of Leavenworth built an Amtrak passenger depot it was an obvious choice for a secluded place to practice that wouldn't get me arrested for disturbing the peace. Finally, my wife and I love to visit Leavenworth, WA when we have time off. Unfortunately, people don't appreciate the beauty of the tuba being played for 3-4 hours on orchestral excerpts...go figure.
